Stephen Frye


As director of the Center for Integrative Chemical Biology and Drug Discovery at UNC, Dr. Frye plays a key role in translational research through collaborative drug discovery projects with other UNC faculty. In addition, his Center has initiated a program in the area of chemical biology of chromatin regulation. Dr. Frye has a broad background in drug discovery and development having co-discovered a marketed product himself (Avodart) and created a department that discovered two FDA approved kinase inhibitor oncology therapies (Lapatinib and Pazopanib) while at GSK. Since joining UNC in 2007, Dr. Frye’s Center has been designated as one of the National Cancer Institute’s chemical biology centers. Dr. Frye received his PhD in organic chemistry from UNC Chapel Hill under the mentorship of the late Prof. Ernest Eliel. He is the author of over 100 patents and publications.
